Learn why you should choose a headless CMS like Cosmic over any other
Cosmic vs. Netlify CMS
Cosmic | Netlify CMS | |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | API-first platform with REST API. Built-in AI agents for content creation, code generation, and automation. No proprietary query language to learn. | Git. Front end tech: HTML, CSS, JavaScript. |
| Scalability | Fully managed, globally distributed infrastructure. Scales automatically with no configuration. AI agents scale with your content needs. | Does not scale easily. Limited by your servers, hosting provider, and budget. |
| Security | SSL everywhere. Role-based access control included on all plans. | You manage the security yourself. No default data encryption at rest or in transit. |
| CMS maintenance | Fully managed platform. Zero maintenance, zero DevOps. Dashboard, media library, AI agents, and all tools hosted and updated automatically. | You deploy, host, and maintain everything yourself. Along with your application and content, you need to maintain updates and security for your CMS system. |
| Global caching | Global CDN with edge caching. Automatic cache invalidation on content publish. No configuration required. | No caching included out of the box. |
| Media CDN | Built-in imgix media CDN with on-the-fly image optimization, resizing, and transformation. AI image generation included on all plans. | No CDN included out of the box. |
| Image processing | imgix-powered transformations via URL parameters. AI image generation creates original images from text descriptions directly in the CMS. | Manually manage your own image sizes and optimizations. |
| Extendability | Webhooks, API integrations, and AI agents that connect to GitHub, Slack, WhatsApp, and Telegram. Multi-agent workflows for custom automation pipelines. | Templates and plugins. |
| Frontend | Works with any frontend framework. Official templates for Next.js, React, Astro, Vue, and more. Autopilot builds and deploys complete applications from a prompt. | Front end is coupled with backend CMS. Not Headless. |
| Number of projects | Free plan includes 1 project (bucket). Paid plans include 2 to 5 projects with additional projects available as add-ons. | One login, one website. |
| Annual costs | Free forever plan. Paid plans from $49/mo (Builder) to $499/mo (Business). AI tokens included on every plan. | You will need to hire developer resources. Average salary of a full-stack developer is $111,600 per year. You may need to hire 1-3 developers to maintain the CMS. |
Why Teams Move from Netlify CMS (Decap CMS) to Cosmic
Netlify CMS, now maintained as Decap CMS, is a Git-based content management interface for static sites. It stores content as Markdown files in your repository and pairs naturally with static site generators like Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, and Gatsby. For small teams or individual developers who want a free, simple editing interface for a Git-backed site, it is a reasonable tool.
But Decap CMS is not a headless CMS in the modern sense. It has no hosted API, no media CDN, no AI agents, and no way to serve content to multiple frontends or non-Git consumers. Cosmic is built for exactly that: API-first content delivery, AI automation, and zero infrastructure management.
What Netlify CMS / Decap CMS Does Well
- Free and open source with no hosting cost for the CMS layer
- Git-based: all content changes are version-controlled in your repository
- Works well with Netlify deployments and static site generators
- Simple setup for small teams already using Git-based workflows
- No database required
Where Netlify CMS / Decap CMS Falls Short
Content lives in your Git repo, not in a hosted API. To use your content in a Next.js app, a mobile app, or any external service, you need to read from Git or build your own API layer. There is no hosted REST endpoint that any consumer can query.
No media CDN. Media management is not a core strength. You configure your own storage and CDN. There is no built-in imgix integration or on-the-fly image transformation.
No AI agents. Decap CMS has no AI features, no content creation agents, no code generation, and no multi-step workflows. It is a Git-backed editing interface, nothing more.
Limited scalability. Large content libraries in a Git repository create performance problems for both the CMS and the build process. As content volume grows, build times increase and the editorial experience degrades.
Actively maintained but not actively developed. Decap CMS is a community-maintained fork. New features, AI capabilities, and infrastructure improvements are not a roadmap priority.
Cosmic's Approach
Cosmic is a fully managed, hosted headless CMS:
- Content stored in a hosted API with global CDN delivery
- REST API queryable by any frontend: Next.js, React, Astro, mobile apps, email tools
- Built-in imgix media CDN with on-the-fly image transformation
- AI agents that create, schedule, and publish content autonomously
- Zero Git repository bloat, zero build-time content fetching limitations
Cosmic's AI platform runs on Claude. Build and deploy full applications from a single prompt.
