Tripwire Interactive has been making games that players come back to for decades. Their titles, including the Red Orchestra series and Killing Floor franchise, have averaged over 40 hours of playtime per player. Millions of fans. Dozens of awards. And behind all of it, a marketing team that needed to move fast without waiting on developers.
That's the problem Cosmic solved.
Who Is Tripwire Interactive?
Founded in 2005 by the award-winning mod team that won the 2004 "$1,000,000 Make Something Unreal" competition, Tripwire Interactive is an entertainment software developer and publisher based in Marietta, Georgia. Their games, including Red Orchestra, Killing Floor, and Maneater, have earned numerous Multiplayer and FPS Game of the Year awards from top editorial sites.
With millions of players across their titles and an active publishing arm, Tripwire's marketing team is constantly creating, updating, and promoting content across their corporate website and individual game properties.
The Problem: Developer Bottlenecks on a React Stack
Tripwire had historically run on Umbraco, a .NET-based CMS. When they decided to rebuild their corporate website on a modern React stack, they faced a familiar challenge: how do you give your marketing team full control over content, without requiring developer involvement every time a game needs a new landing page or a blog post needs updating?
The requirements were clear:
- Each new game needed its own dedicated landing page with marketing content
- Blog, Career, and Press feeds needed to be managed by marketing, not engineering
- The solution had to integrate cleanly with a React frontend
- The API had to be secure and fast
Umbraco wasn't the right fit for a React-first architecture. They needed a headless CMS built for API delivery.
Why Cosmic
Tripwire's lead developer Owen Liversidge evaluated options and chose Cosmic for two concrete reasons: a clean REST API that plugged directly into their React app, and a web-based dashboard simple enough for non-technical marketers to use without training.
The integration with their React stack was straightforward using the :
Clean, typed, and entirely decoupled from the presentation layer. Engineering wires it up once. Marketing owns it from there.
How They Use Cosmic
Game landing pages. Every new Tripwire game release gets its own dedicated landing page, built on a content model the marketing team can populate and update without touching code. New screenshots, trailers, descriptions, and store links go live without a developer pull request.
Blog, Career, and Press feeds. Three of the highest-maintenance content areas on a game studio's website, all managed directly by the marketing team through Cosmic's dashboard. No developer bottleneck. No deployment cycle.
Corporate website content. The parent brand site at tripwireinteractive.com is built on React with Cosmic as the content backend. The marketing team creates, edits, and deletes content on the fly, exactly as they would in any traditional CMS, but with the performance and flexibility of a headless architecture.
The Result
"Cosmic allowed us to easily integrate a secure and fast back-end API into our React app. Cosmic fit our needs with its simple web-based dashboard so that members of our marketing team can create, edit, and delete new content on the fly. Our team has been enjoying the ease of use with the new system."
— Owen Liversidge, Lead Developer, Tripwire Interactive
The marketing team at Tripwire now operates independently of engineering for all content updates. Game launches don't require developer stand-ups to update a landing page. Press releases don't sit in a queue waiting for a deploy. The content operation runs at the speed of marketing, not the speed of code review.
The Bigger Picture
Tripwire's setup is a textbook example of what headless CMS architecture was designed for: a modern React frontend, a structured content backend, and a clean API layer that keeps both teams moving independently.
For game studios and media companies managing multiple properties, this separation is the difference between a marketing team that ships and one that waits.
