Best Sanity Alternatives in 2026: 8 Headless CMSs Compared

Sanity is one of the most capable headless CMSs available: a fully customizable editing app, real-time collaboration, and a flexible query language. Teams usually look for an alternative for one of four reasons: per-seat pricing as the content team grows, an editing interface that needs a developer for every change, GROQ as one more language to learn, or wanting visual page building out of the box. This guide covers eight alternatives and what each does better or worse than Sanity.

We make Cosmic, so weigh our take on it accordingly. Prices were checked against each vendor's pricing page on November 2, 2026, and platforms are listed alphabetically.

Sanity's pricing, for reference

Sanity's Free plan includes 20 seats, 2 public datasets, and 10,000 documents. Growth is $15 per seat per month, so a 20-person team on Growth pays $300/month before any usage overages. Enterprise is priced on request.

What to check before switching

Portable Text. Sanity stores rich text as Portable Text, a JSON structure. Every alternative uses a different format (HTML, Markdown, or its own JSON), so plan a conversion step and test how embedded objects and custom marks map over.

Customization you rely on. If your Studio has custom input components, document actions, or workflows, list them. Hosted alternatives configured in a web interface trade that flexibility for not having to maintain an editor codebase.

References and queries. GROQ queries that join documents need to be rewritten against the new API. Check depth limits on references and how the new API returns nested content.

Real-time collaboration. Sanity's simultaneous editing is a genuine strength. Most alternatives offer drafts and versions with less real-time co-editing.

The alternatives

Contentful

  • Versus Sanity: more built-in governance (roles, environments, workflows) and a large partner ecosystem; less customizable editing.
  • Pricing: Free is for non-commercial use only. Lite is $300/month with 20 users and 1M API calls. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Contentful on September 1, 2026.
  • Watch for: the price step from free to $300/month.

Cosmic

  • Versus Sanity: content models are built in the dashboard rather than in code, so editors and non-developers can add fields. Each plan includes a set number of team members, with additional members at $29 each per month. AI agents that draft, edit, and publish content are included on every plan, along with a hosted MCP server for Cursor and Claude Code. Images are served through imgix.
  • Pricing (verified November 2026): Free is $0 with 1 Bucket, 2 team members, and 1,000 Objects. Builder is $99/month, Team $299/month, Business $499/month, with additional users at $29/month.
  • Watch for: less editor customization than Sanity Studio, no real-time co-editing on the same document, and a smaller community.

DatoCMS

  • Versus Sanity: models configured in the UI, a GraphQL API, and strong image handling out of the box.
  • Pricing: Free covers 1 collaborator and 300 records. Professional is €149/month billed annually (€199 monthly).
  • Watch for: the small Free plan.

Hygraph

  • Versus Sanity: GraphQL-native, with content federation for pulling in data from external APIs.
  • Pricing: Hobby is free with 3 seats and 1,000 entries. Growth starts at $199/month.
  • Watch for: the step from free to $199/month.

Payload

  • Versus Sanity: the closest in philosophy (schemas in TypeScript, highly customizable admin), but open source and self-hosted inside your Next.js app. Figma acquired Payload in June 2025.
  • Pricing: MIT-licensed and free to self-host. Payload Cloud has paused new project deployments, so plan to host it yourself.
  • Watch for: you run the database, storage, and upgrades.

Prismic

  • Versus Sanity: editors assemble pages from developer-defined slices without touching code.
  • Pricing: Free includes 1 user and 4M API calls a month. Paid plans are per repository: Starter $10/month, Small $25/month, Medium $150/month, Platinum $675/month, billed annually.
  • Watch for: better for page building than for complex, relational content.

Storyblok

  • Versus Sanity: a visual editor where marketers build pages from components and see them in place.
  • Pricing: Starter is free for 1 seat. Growth is $99/month with 5 seats; Growth Plus $349/month with 15 seats.
  • Watch for: seat limits per plan; larger teams move to Growth Plus or custom tiers.

Strapi

  • Versus Sanity: open source, self-hosted, with content types built in an admin UI and a large plugin marketplace.
  • Pricing: free to self-host. Strapi Cloud starts at $35 per project per month (Starter), with Pro at $90 and Business at $450.
  • Watch for: Strapi Cloud no longer has a free plan; self-hosting means running the server and database.

How to choose

  • You like Sanity's code-first model but want to self-host: Payload.
  • Your editors want to build pages visually: Storyblok or Prismic.
  • You need enterprise governance: Contentful.
  • You prefer GraphQL: Hygraph or DatoCMS.
  • You want open source with a UI-built schema: Strapi.
  • You want plan-based pricing with a set number of included seats, and AI agents built in: Cosmic.
