Best Headless CMS for Next.js in 2026: 8 Options Compared

Picking a headless CMS for a Next.js site comes down to four questions: how content gets into your components, how editors preview drafts, how the bill grows with your team, and how much of the stack you want to run yourself. This guide compares eight options on exactly those points.
We make Cosmic, so weigh our take on it accordingly. Every competitor price below was checked against that vendor's own pricing page on November 2, 2026, and the platforms are listed alphabetically rather than ranked.

What matters for Next.js specifically
Rendering model. Most Next.js sites mix static pages, incremental revalidation, and server components. Any CMS with a fast read API works, but you want webhooks so a publish can trigger revalidatePath or revalidateTag instead of a full rebuild. All eight options below support webhooks.
Draft preview. Editors should see a draft on the real site before publishing. Next.js Draft Mode makes this straightforward when the CMS can issue a preview token and serve unpublished content.
Bill shape. Some platforms charge per seat, some per API call, some per project. A ten-person content team on a per-seat plan can cost more than a flat plan, and a traffic spike on a usage-based plan can surprise you. Check which number grows for your team.
Who runs it. Hosted platforms handle uptime, backups, and security. Self-hosted options (Payload, Strapi) give you full control and no license fee, in exchange for running the database, storage, and upgrades yourself.
The options
Contentful
Contentful is the incumbent enterprise choice: mature roles, environments, and workflows, with a large partner ecosystem. Salesforce completed its acquisition of Contentful on September 1, 2026; published plans were unchanged as of October.
- Next.js fit: official JavaScript SDK, GraphQL and REST APIs, and a Live Preview SDK for in-context editing.
- Pricing: Free is limited to learning and non-commercial use (10 users, 100,000 API calls a month, hard caps). Lite is $300/month with 20 users and 1M API calls. There is no tier between Lite and custom Enterprise pricing.
- Watch for: the jump from Free to $300/month, and the Free plan's non-commercial restriction.
Cosmic
Cosmic is a hosted headless CMS with a REST API, a TypeScript SDK, and AI agents included on every plan. It is framework-agnostic: the same SDK works in Next.js server components, route handlers, and edge functions.
- Next.js fit: fetch with
@cosmicjs/sdkin server components, revalidate from Cosmic webhooks, and preview drafts in a split pane next to the editor using a short-lived preview token, so no write key reaches the client. Every image is served through imgix, which pairs well withnext/imageor plain URL parameters. - AI and agents: content agents that draft and publish, team agents in Slack, WhatsApp, and Telegram, and a hosted MCP server so Cursor or Claude Code can read and write content.
- Pricing (verified November 2026): Free is $0 with 1 Bucket, 2 team members, and 1,000 Objects. Builder is $99/month, Team $299/month, Business $499/month. Each plan includes a set number of team members, and additional members are $29 each per month. No metered API calls on paid plans.
- Watch for: there is no Next.js-specific package or drag-and-drop page builder; you fetch content with the SDK and build components yourself. The community is smaller than Sanity's or Contentful's.
DatoCMS
DatoCMS is a hosted CMS with a GraphQL API, a strong image pipeline, and a clean editor.
- Next.js fit:
react-datocmsprovides responsive image and structured text components, plus a real-time updates API for previews and visual editing. - Pricing: Free covers 1 collaborator and 300 records. Professional is €149/month billed annually (€199 monthly).
- Watch for: the Free plan is small, and pricing is in euros.
Hygraph
Hygraph (formerly GraphCMS) is GraphQL-native and built around content federation, pulling external APIs into one schema.
- Next.js fit: query the GraphQL API from server components.
- Pricing: Hobby is free with 3 seats and 1,000 entries. Growth starts at $199/month.
- Watch for: a steep step from free to $199/month.
Payload
Payload installs directly into your Next.js app: the admin panel and API live in the same codebase, and you can query content through a Local API with no network hop. Figma acquired Payload in June 2025.
- Next.js fit: the tightest of any option, because it is part of your Next.js project.
- Pricing: the core is MIT-licensed and free to self-host. Payload Cloud has paused new project deployments since the acquisition, so new projects host it themselves. Enterprise features are priced on request.
- Watch for: you own the database, media storage, backups, and upgrades.
Prismic
Prismic is built around slices: developers define reusable page sections in code, and editors assemble pages from them in the Page Builder.
- Next.js fit:
@prismicio/nexthandles previews and image components, and Slice Machine generates typed components. - Pricing: Free includes 1 user and 4M API calls a month. Paid plans are priced per repository: Starter $10/month, Small $25/month, Medium $150/month, and Platinum $675/month, billed annually.
- Watch for: the slice model suits marketing pages better than large catalogs or deeply relational content.
Sanity
Sanity gives developers a fully customizable editing app (Sanity Studio) configured in TypeScript, backed by a real-time hosted content store queried with GROQ or GraphQL.
- Next.js fit:
next-sanitycovers fetching, caching tags, and visual editing through the Presentation tool. The Studio can be embedded as a route in your Next.js app. - Pricing: Free includes 20 seats, 2 public datasets, and 10,000 documents. Growth is $15 per seat per month.
- Watch for: Studio setup is code-first, so editors depend on developers for changes, and per-seat pricing grows with the team.
Storyblok
Storyblok's Visual Editor lets editors build pages from components and see changes in place.
- Next.js fit:
@storyblok/reactmaps CMS components to React components and connects them to the Visual Editor. - Pricing: Starter is free for 1 seat. Growth is $99/month with 5 seats; Growth Plus $349/month with 15 seats.
- Watch for: Starter allows at most 2 seats, so most teams start at $99/month.
How to choose
- You want the CMS inside your codebase and are happy to host it: Payload.
- Editors need a visual, drag-and-drop page builder: Storyblok or Prismic.
- You want a deeply customized editing app and have developers to build it: Sanity.
- You need enterprise governance and already budget for it: Contentful.
- You run on GraphQL or need to federate several content sources: Hygraph or DatoCMS.
- You are a lean team that wants AI agents and an MCP server built in, on a plan-based price: Cosmic.
The fastest way to decide is to build the same two pages (a list and a detail page with a draft preview) on your top two choices. Most of these platforms have a free plan that makes that a one-afternoon test.
