Zero-Click Search: What Content Teams Should Actually Change

On August 11, an essay arguing that the internet's collective memory is disappearing as AI absorbs the web climbed the Hacker News front page and drew close to 700 comments, one of the largest discussions on the board that day. The comments were not really about one publisher's traffic chart. They were about a structural change that content teams are now managing in real time: when an answer engine satisfies the question, the click that used to follow never happens.
Publishers felt it first. Documentation teams felt it next. If you run content for a software company, you are probably seeing some version of it in your own numbers: impressions flat or up, clicks down, and a growing slice of traffic that arrives with no referrer at all because someone got the answer from a model and typed your brand name directly.
There is a lot of advice circulating about how to respond to this, and much of it is cosmetic. This post is about the part that is structural. What follows is the architecture underneath that checklist.
The unit of distribution moved from the page to the fact
For twenty years the page was the atom of the web. You optimized a page, ranked a page, measured a page, and the page carried everything: the claim, the context, the navigation, the CTA, the brand.
An answer engine does not want your page. It wants one fact from it, expressed cleanly enough to be quoted with confidence. Your pricing tier. Your API rate limit. The date a feature shipped. Whether you support a given framework. The model assembles an answer out of facts pulled from many sources, and the source that gets named is usually the one where the fact was easiest to extract and hardest to misread.
That has a direct consequence for how content is stored. A fact buried in the fourth paragraph of a 2,000 word essay, wrapped in three qualifying clauses and rendered inside a page template, is expensive to extract and easy to get wrong. The same fact stored as a typed field with a name, a value, and a last-updated timestamp is cheap to extract and hard to misquote.
Most content teams do not have a writing problem here. They have a storage problem.
Three things that actually change
1. Your content has to be retrievable without a browser
If the only way to get your content is to render a page and parse the HTML, then every consumer of your content is a scraper, and every template change is a breaking change. Structured content solves this at the source. The content lives as typed fields and gets served over an API, so the same body of work feeds your website, your docs, your app, and any model or agent that asks for it.
Here is what that looks like with the Cosmic TypeScript SDK:

Two details in that query matter more than they look. .props() returns only the fields you name, so the response is small and predictable instead of a wall of markup. .depth(1) resolves related objects, so the author comes back as a real object with a name rather than an ID you have to chase with a second request. The result is a clean JSON payload where every value has a name and a type.
That is the format a model can consume without guessing, and it is the same payload your front end already uses. You are not building a second content system for machines.
2. Facts need to be typed, not narrated
The practical version of this is unglamorous: stop storing important facts only inside prose.
If your pricing lives only in a paragraph, every AI answer about your pricing is a paraphrase of a paraphrase. If your pricing lives in typed fields, the number is the number. Same for supported frameworks, version numbers, limits, and dates. Model the facts that people ask about as fields, then render the prose from them.
This is also where a content team stops being blocked on engineering. Maximilian Wuhr, Co-Founder at FINN, put the value of that plainly:
"Cosmic is: us never having to ask a developer to change anything on the backend of our website."
Adding a field to a content model and backfilling it across a hundred objects is a content-team task in a headless CMS. In a template-driven system it is a ticket, a sprint, and a deploy.
3. Models need a live path to your content, not a stale crawl
This is the piece most teams have not touched yet. Training data and crawler indexes are snapshots. If your product changed last week, the snapshot is wrong, and no amount of on-page optimization fixes a stale copy sitting inside someone else's index.
The fix is giving models a live, permissioned path to the current version. That is what the Model Context Protocol does. The control that makes this safe to hand out is key scoping. What to do this quarter
A short, honest list. All of this is doable without a replatform.
- Audit your top 20 pages for extractable facts. For each one, name the single question the page answers. If the answer is not a typed field somewhere, that is the first field to add.
- Add a last-updated field and populate it. Freshness is a real ranking and citation signal, and an empty timestamp is a wasted one. Render it on the page.
- Model your comparison and pricing facts. These are the highest-frequency questions models get asked about vendors, and the most damaging ones to get paraphrased wrong.
- Give your docs and your marketing site the same source of truth. Two systems means two answers, and a model will happily quote the older one.
- Connect one AI client to your CMS with a read-only key. Ask it questions about your own content. The gaps it stumbles on are your content gaps, surfaced faster than any audit tool will find them.
- Change what you measure. Referral clicks alone will understate your performance in an answer-engine world. Watch direct and unattributed sessions, branded query volume, and signups that arrive with no referrer.
What not to do
Do not build a separate machine-readable version of your site. Two copies drift, and the drift is the thing that produces wrong answers.
Do not rewrite everything into FAQ soup. Question-shaped headings help when the question is real. Two hundred manufactured questions dilute a page and read badly to the humans who still arrive.
Do not chase every crawler user agent. Access control belongs at the API and key level, where it is enforceable, rather than in a robots file that expresses a preference.
Do not treat this as an SEO tactic. The teams handling this well are changing how content is stored, which pays off across their site, their app, their docs, and whatever interface comes after chat.
The through line
The web is getting a new class of reader that does not scroll, does not click, and does not forgive ambiguity. Content that is stored as typed, versioned, API-accessible data serves that reader and every existing one at the same time. Content locked inside page templates serves neither especially well.
